Sporting KC Swoop For Derby County's Johnny Russell
With Chelsea landing Olivier Giroud and Arsenal finally agreeing a deal with Dortmund for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the deadline day headlines were already written.
But with just minutes left on the clock, Championship side Derby County agreed terms with Sporting Kansas City to sign attacker Johnny Russell for an undisclosed fee.
Russell, 27, is a Scottish International with years of Championship experience under his belt who has already featured 25 times for the Rams this season, helping them to second in the league.
With his contract at Derby expiring in July, manager Gary Rowett explained he soon realised he would struggle to keep Russell. "He's been offered improved contracts. But his wish is to pursue a chance to play in the MLS. Based on the fact he has basically turned down those contracts we will have to look at the situation."
Russell started his career at Scottish side Dundee United where he made over 100 appearances in 6 years before his move to England in Derbyshire. He netted 29 goals for Derby County in 5 years but the team continued to fail to gain promotion to the English Premier League.
