New York City FC's first ever draft pick, Khiry Shelton has been traded to Sporting KC in exchange for Saad Abdul-Salaam.

24 year old attacker Khiry Shelton joined NYCFC 3 years ago, scoring 6 goals and providing 7 assists in his 57 appearances. He joins Sporting Kansas City in exchange for defender Abdul-Salaam who's made 78 competitive appearances since joining MLS in 2015 out of the University of Akron. The right back recorded 1 goal and 9 assists for the club.

Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes says Shelton was always on his radar.

“Khiry is a player whose intangibles always stood out to us, even as we had followed him from early in his college years, we look forward to bringing him to Kansas City and are enthusiastic to see him on the field during preseason, which is just over a month away. Sporting KC also thanks Saad for his three years of service, and we wish him the best of luck in New York.”

New York City boss Patrick Vieira is also satisfied with the deal which strengthens his side defensively.

“Abdul-Salaam is an experienced player in this league and he’s coming to our team hungry for success. I’m really happy to have added another quality player who can help the team to be successful.”
